What is the Living Quilt?
The Living Quilt symbolizes “Hope made Tangible”. The Quilt was created to encourage “life after HIV”, which we refer to as Living Positive, because living with HIV today usually means living a long, productive, and rewarding life. Research has recently confirmed, that with early detection and the advancement of medications along with lifestyle adjustments there is no major difference in life expectancy between positive and negative people. The Living Quilt is a testament to survival and a symbol for facing adversity head on. More participants than ever have been living with HIV for more than 25 years. Hope is tangible when resilience is shared between those living with HIV.
Constructed of 3 separate panels, the tapestry depicts a vast, mountainous scene created with over 40 different patterned fabrics into a an 80ft2 symbol of resilience and strength by individuals living with HIV. The Living Quilt is adorned with numbered buttons with attached ribbons. The numbered button proudly displays the Quilt participant’s total years living positive. The ribbon announces the name chosen by the participant – as long as it’s in good taste.
Being part of The Living Quilt is free to anyone living with HIV. Please visit here to apply for membership on The Living Quilt. Please note: This form requires your signature to include your ribbon on The Living Quilt when displayed in public.
